Overview

Kilmist Keyboard XL is data entry tool that turns your Pocket PC screen into a slick, spacious and responsive keyboard to facilitate the fastest input method. Keyboard XL has two screen modes: 1.Keyboard screen and 2. Rich Edit screen. Keyboard screen helps you to do all the typing work. Rich Edit screen helps you to edit, customize your keyboard settings like font, key mapping, preferences, and look and feel. Accomplish all your typing tasks using Keyboard XL and easily transfer the text into the application of your choice (Word, Email etc).

Keyboard XL opens a full screen keyboard on application start and you can start typing. Edit area at the top of the keyboard will display the content that you have typed. To enter a single capital letter use shift key + letter. To type in all caps, press the caps lock key and continue typing. To type punctuation marks, click 'pn' button + punctuation mark. To start a new line, use 'Enter' key. Tab key is represented by an ellipse. To move to beginning of the line, use shift + left arrow. To move to the end of the line, use shift + right arrow. To move to the previous line, use Pocket PC's navigation 'button - up'. To move to the next line, use Pocket PC's navigation 'button - down'.

To preview the content, just click on the down arrow, between the edit area and backspace button and click on the line you want to edit. Kilmist keyboard XL allows you to use the edit features right from the keyboard screen.  When you are all done with typing, exit the application either from keyboard screen or from 'Rich Edit' screen. All the text in the edit area is automatically sent to the clipboard on application exit (this option can also be customized from rich edit screen).  To transfer the content that you typed in Kilmist Keyboard XL into another application, open another application and paste the contents using edit menu.

Type away:

Kilmist Keyboard XL by default opens the keyboard on application start.
  1. Click on Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Type away submenu or click on 'Type away' icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Start typing.

Preferences:

Kilmist Keyboard XL lets you customize the settings to your choice and convenience.

Open the keyboard on application start

Copy text into clipboard on exit

Key-repeat on 'Back Space', 'Delete', 'Left', and 'Right' arrow buttons Settings on start

Open the keyboard on application start:

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences.
  2. Check/uncheck the option 'Open keyboard on application start'.

Copy text into clipboard on exit:

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences
  2. Check/Uncheck the option 'Copy text into clipboard on exit'.

Key-repeat on 'Back Space', 'Delete', 'Left', and 'Right' arrow buttons:

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences.
  2. Check the key-repeat option, if you want to delete or move repeatedly. For example if you type a 5 letters word wrong, just keep the delete/backspace button pressed until the word is completely erased.
  3. Uncheck the key-repeat option to disable key-repeat, if you don't want to delete or move continuously. For example if you type a 5 letters word wrong, you need to press the delete/backspace button 5 times.
  4. You can also configure the repeat frequency (faster/slower) with the help of slider.

Settings on start:

Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences. Enable one of the three options.
  1. Clear the edit area: The edit area of your keyboard is cleared every time you start the application.
  2. Load the text from last use: The edit area of your keyboard will be loaded with the contents that you saved from the last time you used the keyboard. 
  3. Paste text from clipboard: This option pastes the contents of the clipboard into the edit area of the keyboard on application start.

Assign a 'Hardware' key for easy access to the application

Kilmist Keyboard XL can be pulled up/down with just a button press.

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences.
  2. Or click on the 'Menu' icon at the left bottom corner of the keyboard screen and click on 'Preferences..'
  3. In the 'Preferences..' dialog, click on 'Keys' tab.
  4. Check 'on' the 'Assign Hardware key to pull up/down Kilmist Keyboard XL'
  5. Click on the 'Hardware Button' dropdown box and pick the hot key that you want to configure for an easy access to the Keyboard XL application.

Turn keyboard

Kilmist Keyboard XL can be turned left or right.

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Preferences.
  2. Or click on the 'Menu' icon at the left bottom corner of the keyboard screen and click on 'Preferences..'
  3. In the 'Preferences..' dialog, click on 'Action' tab.
  4. Under 'Direction' select Left Handed (keyboard has to be turned left to type) or Right Handed (keyboard has to be turned right to type).

Change skins

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel
  2. Select the skin from the keyboard skin drop down box and click on OK.

Change font

Kilmist Keyboard XL lets you change the font that is used in the edit area

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel. 
  2. In Look & Feel dialog, click on 'Change Edit Font' button. 
  3. Select a font from the Available fonts drop down box, set the size and font face, preview the font and click on ok.

New key map

Kilmist Keyboard XL allows you to map individual keys to certain characters. Foreign language characters like Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc might require the font to be installed on your Pocket PC. 

Each key map has 5 stages (Normal, Shift/Cap, Punctuation, Umlaut, Shift + Umlaut) 

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel. 
  2. In Look & Feel dialog, click on 'New Key Map' button. Enter the new key map name.
  3. Select a stage that you want to map for from the 'Key Map for' drop down box. For example 'Normal'.
  4. Select a key that you want to change, the key will be highlighted.
  5. You can enter the mapping character's Unicode value or just the character.
  6. To enter the Unicode value of the character, click in the Unicode box, enter the value and click on '<<' button.
  7. To enter the character value, click in the letterbox and enter a character.
  8. Once you are done with mapping all the keys for one stage, repeat the process for remaining stages.
  9. Click on 'OK'.

Edit key map

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel. 
  2. In Look & Feel dialog, select the key map that you want to edit from the 'Key Map' drop down box.
  3. Click on 'Edit Key Map' button. 
  4. Select the stage that you want to edit from 'Key Map for' drop down box.
  5. Edit the individual key mappings.
  6. Click on OK.

Change key map

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel. 
  2. In Look & Feel dialog, select the key map that you want to use from the 'Key Map' drop down box.
  3. Click on OK.

Change keyboard layout

  1. Click on the Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Look & Feel. 
  2. In Look & Feel dialog, select one of the three layouts (Flat, Crest, Trough).
  3. Click on OK.

Navigate between screens

  1. From keyboard screen, click on the 'Menu icon' icon at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on 'Rich Edit' in the popup menu.
  2. From the 'Rich Edit' screen, click on Tools Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Type away or click on the 'Type away' icon at the bottom of the screen.

Move in the edit area

Kilmist Keyboard XL allows you to move in the edit area. 

  1. To move to the beginning of the line, click on shift + left arrow key.
  2. To move to the end of the line, click on shift + right arrow key.
  3. To move between lines, click on the down arrow key, between edit area and backspace button. A drop down edit area will appear and you can click on the line that you want to edit.
  4. Or use Pocket PC's navigation button-down to go to Next line and navigation button-up to go to previous line.
  5. To move across the line, use Pocket PC's navigation button-left or rocker switch 'down' to move to previous letter and navigation button-right or rocker switch 'up' to move to next letter.
  6. To select a line or part of a line, click, hold and drag the cursor across the line either forward or backward in the edit area.

In-place edit features

Kilmist Keyboard XL allows cut, copy and paste edit features within the edit area.

  1. Select a word, a sentence or a line that you want to manipulate.
  2. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Cut or Copy.
  3. Move to the line where you want to paste.
  4. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Paste.

Select a line

  1. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Select Line.

Clear all

  1. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Clear all.

Copy all

Copy all copies the content of the edit area into the clipboard.

  1. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Copy all.

Delete a word

  1. Click in the edit area and drag across to select a word and click on delete/backspace to erase.

Delete a line:

  1. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Select Line.
  2. Click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard and click on Cut.

Save as

If you don't have time to copy and paste into another application before you switch off your Pocket PC, Kilmist Keyboard XL allows you to save the contents in a file.

  1. From the Rich Edit screen, click on the File Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Save as.
  2. Enter the name of the file or just save as Last used.

Exit:

Kilmist Keyboard XL allows you exit the program from the keyboard screen or the Rich Edit screen.

  1. From the Keyboard screen, click on the 'Menu icon' at the left bottom corner of the keyboard, click on Exit.
  2. From the Rich Edit screen, click on the File Menu at the bottom of the screen and click on Exit.
